"East Cleveland" as Code
Perceptions of a place can sometimes erase people's daily lives and social experiences, in ways that can sometimes do a disservice to both people and places. In this 23-second clip, Leslye Huff discusses hearing an administrator using "East Cleveland" as a code for the undesirable qualities of a city. East Cleveland is a predominantly African American and economically struggling city. This shorthand does not recognize the complexity of life in East Cleveland and ignores the positive experiences people have there. Racism and classism outside of East Cleveland affect how others see the city and has implications for resource acquisiton and development.
