Appearance vs. Substance

Jacqueline Gillon

Jacqueline Gillon discusses how people want to "appear" to be doing well, even if they are not doing so in actuality. In the 1980s and 1990s, many middle-class African Americans left East Cleveland for various reasons. Some community storytellers specifically expressed concerns about drugs and the concurrent violence. However, this is far from the entire story. Beginning with Reaganomics in the 1980s, cities were becoming defunded, while at the same time manufacturing plants were being closed. This led, in part, to the economic challenges and fiscal emergencies facing East Cleveland. This short clip asks you consider, why when one community gets a "cold," another may experience it as "pneumonia"?
