The Reach of Racism

Racism is currently in effect today, and it is compounded by a legacy of racism in the past. Actions and beliefs spanning the time of enslavement of African-descended people up until contemporary times continue to impact people's perceptions, attitudes, and ideas, as well as their individual and social relationships. In the 21st century, African Americans not only find themselves consistently navigating a society structured by racial and economic inequalities, but also working through the racial echoes and legacies of the past. When we consider how women practice place making in Northeast Ohio, we can ask ourselves, how has racism shaped their collective experiences?
